Keira Knightley stars as whistle blower Katherine Gun, a former British intelligence agency translator who in 2003 leaked top-secret information related to the US’ push to invade Iraq.

The UK trailer has arrived for Official Secrets, which follows Gun’s decision to leak an email from the NSA requesting a secret and illegal operation to bug the United Nations offices of six nations on the UN Security Council – nations that could determine whether the UN approved the invasion of Iraq.

Directed by Gavin Hood (Tsotsi, Eye in the Sky), who wrote the script with Gregory Bernstein (The Conspirator) and Sara Bernstein, the film also stars Ralph Fiennes, Matthew Goode and Matt Smith.

It’s a solid trailer, hinting at a strong performance from Knightley and a potentially riveting story that needs more light shed on it – particularly as whistle blowers Julian Assange and Edward Snowden’s stories are far from over. Fingers crossed for a standout political thriller here.

Official Secrets hits the UK on October 18.
