There’s a beach where visitors mysteriously age rapidly – becoming old in a day.
That’s the basic concept of Old, the latest feature from filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan (The Sixth Sense, Signs, The Village, The Happening). Our first look at the film has arrived in the form of a 30-second Super Bowl television spot that may be short, but is more than long enough to drive up the intrigue. A child goes missing, only to return as a young man – in the same day. A little girl seems to grow into a woman – and then even goes through pregnancy and becomes a mother (?) – in the same day.
Shyamalan directed and wrote the screenplay, an adaptation of a graphic novel titled Sandcastle, by Pierre Oscar Lévy and Frederik Peeters.
The filmmaker’s output over the years has certainly been a mixed bag when it comes to quality, from highs such as The Sixth Sense and Split, to ultra lows such as The Happening and The Last Airbender. We’ll see what we’re for with Old, which, at least for now, appears full of intriguing potential.
Old, starring Gael García Bernal (Mozart in the Jungle), Vicky Krieps (Phantom Thread), Rufus Sewell (The Man in the High Castle), Ken Leung (Star Wars: Episode VII—The Force Awakens), Alex Wolff (Hereditary), Nikki Amuka-Bird (Jupiter Ascending), Abbey Lee (Lovecraft Country), and Thomasin McKenzie (Jojo Rabbit), among others, arrives in Australian cinemas on July 22nd and opens in US cinemas on July 23rd.
