Olivia Colman to Star in Next Film from Director Sam Mendes & Cinematographer Roger Deakins

The next film from American Beauty and 1917 director Sam Mendes has its star – Oscar winner Olivia Colman.

Mendes has also written the planned film, which has been titled Empire of Light. This is the first film Mendes has penned on his own; he co-wrote 1917 with Krysty Wilson-Cairns.

Plot details are being kept under wraps, although it is known that the story will take place on England’s South Coast in the ’80s. It’s being described as a love story, “set in and around a beautiful old cinema.”

Excitingly, Empire of Light will be reuniting Mendes with cinematographer extraordinaire Roger Deakins (No Country for Old Men, Blade Runner 2049). The two previously worked together on Jarhead, Revolutionary Road, Skyfall and 1917, the latter of which earned Deakins his second Best Achievement in Cinematography Oscar.

Colman has had quite an impressive few years. The British star earned a Best Actress Oscar for 2018’s The Favourite, took home a Golden Globe for her performance as Queen Elizabeth II in Netflix’s The Crown, and is this year Oscar nominated for her turn opposite Anthony Hopkins in The Father.
