Netflix‘s highly unexpected sequel to Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is moving ahead, and the cast keeps growing.
Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Watchmen, Ambulance) is the latest addition to The Adventures of Cliff Booth, set to join returning star Brad Pitt, reprising his Oscar-winning role as stuntman Cliff Booth. The film will be directed by none other than David Fincher (Se7en, Fight Club, The Social Network), with a screenplay penned by Tarantino himself.

While plot details remain under wraps, the film is expected to catch up with Cliff Booth as he takes on a new chapter as a Hollywood fixer. As first reported by Deadline, Abdul-Mateen II’s character is in the vein of Jim Brown — the football star who left the NFL for a successful acting career in films such as The Dirty Dozen. Netflix has yet to confirm the news.
Abdul-Mateen II joins a cast that also includes Elizabeth Debicki (The Crown, Tenet) and Scott Caan (Hawaii Five-0). Expect more big names to be announced as it all comes together.
The film moves forward as a result of an unlikely but intriguing convergence of creative forces. Pitt reportedly secured Tarantino’s blessing to share the script with Fincher, leading to Netflix financing and distributing the project. Fincher, who has an exclusive deal with Netflix and previously collaborated on House of Cards and Love, Death & Robots, will continue that partnership here.
Abdul-Mateen II adds this project to a resume boasting a number of high-profile titles. He’s leading the upcoming Marvel series Wonder Man for Disney+, starring in Netflix’s Man on Fire series, and has previously appeared in Aaron Sorkin’s The Trial of the Chicago 7, Michael Bay’s Ambulance, The Matrix Resurrections, Candyman, HBO’s Watchmen (for which he won an Emmy), and the Aquaman films as DC Comics character Black Manta.
Netflix has not yet announced a release date. For now, The Adventures of Cliff Booth remains one of the more surprising — and fascinating — expansions of Tarantino’s cinematic world. As for Tarantino’s tenth and final film – that one is still in development.
