New ‘One Battle After Another’ Trailer: Leonardo DiCaprio vs. Sean Penn in Paul Thomas Anderson’s Latest

Take a look above at the new trailer that’s been released for One Battle After Another, the explosive new film from Paul Thomas Anderson (There Will Be Blood, Boogie Nights) — and his first time directing Leonardo DiCaprio.

Radicals return when history repeats

A combustible blend of action, politics, and PTA-style chaos shown off in the trailer. DiCaprio stars as Bob Ferguson, a once-radical revolutionary who’s now living in seclusion under the name “Ghetto Pat.” But when a former enemy (played by Sean Penn) re-emerges, Bob’s past comes crashing back — dragging him, and a new generation, into another fight.

That includes his teenage daughter (Chase Infiniti), a budding activist caught between legacy and idealism. Joining the fray are Benicio del Toro, Regina Hall, Teyana Taylor, and Wood Harris as Bob’s old allies, while Penn plays the hate-fuelled antagonist Col. Lockjaw. Cue up gunfights, impassioned speeches, and some inspiration from Del Toro, “Freedom is no fear, just like Tom Cruise!” he says mid-car chase as DiCaprio jumps out of his moving vehicle.

Pynchon energy, PTA regulars, and one hell of a soundtrack

Loosely inspired by Thomas Pynchon’s Vineland (Anderson previously adapted Pynchon’s Inherent Vice), the film was shot on 35mm using VistaVision cameras and has Anderson reuniting with key collaborators: cinematographer Michael Bauman, editor Andy Jurgensen, production designer Florencia Martin, and composer Jonny Greenwood.

One Battle After Another opens in Australian cinemas on September 25 and in U.S. cinemas on September 26.
