Oscars 2019 Nominations List: ‘Roma’, ‘A Star is Born’ & ‘Black Panther’ Among Contenders

The nominations of the 91st Academy Awards have been announced.

Most of this year’s Oscar nominees have been mostly expected. As the frontrunners, earning 10 nominations each: Alfonso Cuarón’s fantastic Netflix film Roma, with nods including Best Picture, Best Foreign Language Film, Best Director and Best Actress (Yalitza Aparicio); and Yorgos Lanthimos’ The Favourite, up for Best Picture, Best Actress (Olivia Colman) and Best Original Screenplay, among others. Adam McKay’s Vice and Bradley Cooper’s A Star is Born followed behind with 8 nominations each, with Christian Bale and Lady Gaga up for acting nods respectively.

Some good news for Black Panther fans. The Marvel film is the first comic book movie to ever be nominated for Best Picture, with other noms (7 in total) including Best Original Score and Best Original Song.

Following its somewhat surprising Golden Globe wins, Bohemian Rhapsody has received solid love from the Academy, earning nominations for Best Pic, Best Actor (Rami Malek), and Film Editing, among others.

Others of note: Spike Lee earning his first Best Director nomination for BlacKkKlansman, Bradley Cooper missing out on a Best Director nod, no major category love for Damien Chazelle’s First Man, a pleasantly surprising and very well deserved Supporting Actress nomination for Roma‘s Marina de Tavira, and streaming service Netflix locking itself in as a major studio contender with 15 total nominations (bettered by Walt Disney Studios — 17, Participant Media — 17, and Fox Searchlight — 15).

The 2019 Academy Awards will be airing in the US on February 24, or February 25 in Australia.
