The official trailer has arrived for Other Mommy, and Jessica Chastain has rarely looked more unsettling. The Oscar winner pulls double duty as both a frightened mother and the sinister entity wearing her face, one that has taken a worrying interest in her young daughter. The upcoming horror film unveils a creepy little pressure cooker of a trailer, complete with one particularly effective jump scare. Watch the trailer above and read on for what to know.
The Other Mommy Trailer Finds Something Terrifying Under the Table
The footage introduces Bela (Arabella Olivia Clark), a young girl who has been spending time with a woman she calls “Other Mommy”. She looks exactly like Bela’s real mother, Ursula, and appears friendly enough as she cooks pasta in the family kitchen. There is just one problem: Other Mommy is not supposed to leave her room.
More on Screen Realm:
When Bela’s father, known as Daddo and played by Jay Duplass, enters the kitchen, his daughter appears to be alone. He smells something burning, looks around and finds… something waiting beneath the table.
From there, the footage rapidly widens the nightmare as Ursula struggles to convince Bela that she is the real parent and the entity’s interest in the child begins to look far more sinister than Bela understands.
The film marks Chastain’s return to horror after roles in Mama — another parental-themed scarefest — and It: Chapter Two. Alongside Clark and Duplass, the supporting cast includes Dichen Lachman (Severance), Arian Moayed (Succession) and Karen Allen (Raiders of the Lost Ark).
From the Director of Host and The Boogeyman
Other Mommy is directed by Rob Savage, who broke through with the highly effective 2020 Zoom-call horror film Host before taking on the Stephen King adaptation The Boogeyman in 2023.
Savage appears to be working with a larger canvas here while retaining his knack for building scares around confined spaces and characters who cannot trust what they are seeing. The trailer keeps much of the entity hidden or distorted, allowing its movements and sudden appearances to do more work than lengthy explanations.
The screenplay comes from Nathan Elston, who served as a staff writer on HBO’s Succession. It is based on Josh Malerman’s bestselling 2024 novel Incidents Around the House. Malerman is also the author behind Bird Box, which was adapted into the hit Sandra Bullock-led Netflix film.
There is considerable modern-horror muscle behind the production as well. James Wan, the filmmaker behind the Saw, Insidious and The Conjuring franchises, is among the producers, with Atomic Monster and Blumhouse producing.
When Is Other Mommy Being Released?
Other Mommy opens in Australian cinemas on 8 October and U.S. cinemas on 9 October.
