Check out the teaser trailer that’s arrived for Our Flag Means Death, an upcoming pirate comedy series executive produced by and co-starring Taika Waititi.

The series is led by comedic New Zealand star and Waititi’s buddy Rhys Darby (Flight of the Conchords, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle), who plays real-life early eighteenth-century Englishman Stede Bonnet. A moderately wealthy land-owner and pampered aristocrat, Stede decided to leave his life and family behind to become a pirate. Yep, he entered a cutthroat, ultra-risky line of work – with absolutely no experience. Still, for a period, it didn’t go too badly; he even worked with a pirate named Edward Teach, you may know better as Blackbeard. As for who’s playing that feared and revered pirate: Waititi (pictured below), who also directed the pilot ep.

Our Flag Means Death was created by David Jenkins, previously behind TBS comedy sci-fi series People of Earth. “[Stede] had one of the world’s great, colorful midlife crises,” Jenkins, also showrunner and writer, said to EW (the outlet that unveiled the images above and below). “That’s a great way into a show in any genre, but to mix that with pirates, I was like, Oh, this is fantastic.”

Jenkins calls the series a “workplace show in a strange environment” – so if you wanted The Office to have more… swashbuckling, look no further!

Our Flag Means Death, with a cast that also includes Fred Armisen, Leslie Jones, Ewen Bremmer, Nat Faxon, David Fane, Nathan Foad, Joel Fry, Samson Kayo, Guz Khan, Rory Kinnear, Matt Maher, Kristian Nairn, Con O’Neill and Vico Ortiz, will be hitting Binge in Australia and HBO Max in the U.S. sometime in March.
