Netflix has dropped a teaser trailer for Our Souls at Night, an upcoming romantic drama starring Oscar winners Robert Redford and Jane Fonda.
The film tells the story of two widows living in a small Colorado town. They’ve been neighbours for decades, but haven’t had much contact. Now, living alone and with their children far away, the two make a connection.
Helmer Ritesh Batra, whose drama The Sense of an Ending has been rolling out over the last few months, directs from a screenplay by increasingly in-demand writers Scott Neustadter & Michael H. Weber, who are known for 500 Days of Summer, The Spectacular Now, The Fault in Our Stars, and upcoming films The Disaster Artists and X-Men: The New Mutants.
The picture is based on the book of the same name by author Kent Haruf, who wrote it while dying of lung disease at age 71. The book was published posthumously.
Now, this is but a teaser, so don’t go in expecting much footage or even plot points – other than, you know, they get together. It’s a sweet little teaser though, and it’s refreshing to get a marketing piece that doesn’t spell out everything. We could have one romantic tearjerker here, and with two grand performers no less.
Our Souls at Night, also starring Judy Greer, Matthias Schoenaerts and Bruce Dern, will arrive on Netflix on September 29.
Synopsis for Our Souls at Night:
Based on the novel written by Kent Haruf and adapted for the screen by Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber (The Fault in Our Stars), Our Souls at Night is set in Colorado and begins when Addie Moore (Jane Fonda) pays an unexpected visit to a neighbor, Louis Waters (Robert Redford). Her husband died years ago, as did his wife, and in such a small town they’d been neighbors for decades, but had little contact. Their children live far away and they are all alone in their big houses. She seeks to establish a connection, and make the most of the rest of the time they have.
