Pacific Rim 2: Guillermo del Toro Directing, Release Date Confirmed

Pacific Rim 2 is officially happening. Earlier this month we reported that Guillermo del Toro was in the process of writing the sequel with Zak Penn (X2, X-Men: The Last Stand, The Avengers). Well, word has now come through saying that del Toro will be directing the picture and that the film is to hit U.S. cinemas on April 7, 2017.

“The characters I love will return,” del Toro told BuzzFeed. “Raleigh, Mako, Newt, Gottlieb and who knows, maybe even Hannibal Chau – but we are taking them into a fresh territory that will display amazing sights and battles. The first film set the stage and now we’re ready to have a blast.”

The first film didn’t really make waves at the U.S. box office, bringing in just over $100 million. Luckily, a worldwide draw of $309 million ensured decent returns on the film’s $190 million budget.

Legendary Pictures is certainly confident in Pacific Rim’s potential as a franchise. Their confidence would be no doubt boosted by the success of their recent Godzilla outing, which brought in over $478 million on a production budget of $160 million.

Del Toro is one busy guy. Not only is he now taking on the sure-to-be-massive task of developing Pacific Rim 2, he’s also currently in production on his upcoming horror pic Crimson Peak and is exec producing the upcoming horror series The Strain.

Del Toro released this announcement video, in which he talks about Pacific Rim 2 and the animated spinoff series:
