Paul Rudd has been cast as Ant-Man in the upcoming Marvel film from director Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead, Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World). The Wrap has reported that Marvel has chosen Rudd as the lead after months of speculation.
Marvel also chased Joseph Gordon-Levitt to play Ant-Man, but he wasn’t interested in the role. Instead, Levitt will be starring in and producing Sandman, with an eye on directing the film as well.
Ant-Man, aka Hank Pym, is a scientist who invents a substance known as Pym Particles that allow him to change size from microscopic to gigantic, as well as being able to communicate with insects. Rudd is a decent choice, considering the character’s comedic elements. Whether or not Rudd can pull it off as an action star remains to be seen. Still, Marvel has a pretty good track record when it comes to their casting choice.
It will be interesting to see what they do with Ant-Man’s plot. In the comics, Ant-Man, a founding member of the Avengers, is responsible for creating Ultron, the lead villain in Joss Whedon’s upcoming sequel The Avengers: Age of Ultron.
Edgar Wright is directing the movie from a script he co-wrote with Joe Cornish (Attack the Block).
Disney is set to release Ant-Man on July 31, 2015.
