Peacemaker Finds an Alternate Universe — And More Trouble
Season 2 finds John Cena‘s Christopher Smith stumbling into a portal that leads to a version of reality where everything seems just right. But this alternate world pushes him to confront past trauma—and sparks a chain of interdimensional chaos.

The trailer shows Peacemaker finding what seems like his perfect world, while back in the real one, Frank Grillo’s Rick Flag Sr. is gunning for him, fuelled by the death of his son, Rick Flag Jr. (played by Joel Kinnaman in Suicide Squad and Gunn’s The Suicide Squad). As Leota reminds him: “No matter how green the grass is over there, you belong here – with us.”
At Comic-Con, creator James Gunn said (as quoted by Variety), “I really like TV shows where the characters don’t just return every season and they’re the same exact characters. I want to see growth. I want to see change and sometimes regression.” He added, “Peacemaker is a different guy this year. He’s dealing with the demons he uncovered from the first season and trying to deal with them, and the world is not accepting him the way he is. They aren’t accepting him as a hero.”
The trailer is also set to Ozzy Osbourne’s “Road to Nowhere” — a fitting needle drop, especially in light of the Black Sabbath frontman’s recent passing at age 76.
Cast, Cameos and Dance Numbers
Returning cast includes Cena, Danielle Brooks, Jennifer Holland, Freddie Stroma, and Steve Agee. They’re joined by Grillo, Sol Rodriguez, Tim Meadows, and David Denman.
Harcourt gets a spotlight moment with a barroom beatdown, a sequence Gunn called his favourite day on set—until filming Episode 8.
The viral dance opening from season 1 is getting a revamp in season 2’s opening, but not in a way that tries to outdo the original. “It isn’t trying to one-up the first season. It’s bigger, there’s a different vibe to it. New characters, different dancers,” Gunn explained.
Holland said, “We have an amazing choreographer who took James’ idea and vibe he was going for and made something special. I had an amazing time doing it. I don’t want to spoil anything but there is one particular thing I requested to the universe: ‘Please allow me to do the lift from Dirty Dancing.’ I got to do a lift and it’s amazing.”
Grillo quipped, “The dancing started out as something I reluctantly did and it turned into me being the best dancer on stage.”
Canon Connections and Peacemaker’s DCU Future
The season is set after Gunn’s Superman – and will be firmly connected to his unfolding DC Universe. As we saw with Peacemaker‘s teaser trailer, Christopher will be facing a grilling from Justice League candidates Guy Gardner (Nathan Fillion), Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced), and Maxwell Lord (Sean Gunn).
Peacemaker’s father is also back—kind of. Robert Patrick returns as the ghost of Auggie, still lurking like a racist Obi-Wan. Alien butterfly Goff is alive, and Eagley’s not left behind either. Gunn also mentioned Michael Rooker playing a world-class eagle hunter—a character he jokingly described as Eagley’s Lex Luthor.
Gunn penned all eight episodes and directed three, including the premiere. He executive produces alongside Peter Safran and Cena. The series is produced by Troll Court Entertainment and The Safran Company in association with Warner Bros. Television.
Release Date
Peacemaker season 2 premieres on HBO Max on August 22, with new episodes released weekly.
