The official teaser trailer has arrived for Practical Magic 2, bringing Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman back to the Owens house. Watch the trailer above, then read on for what this long-awaited return to the witchy favourite is setting up.
A Return To The Owens Family — And Their Not-So-Gentle Curse
The teaser opens with Bullock’s Sally guiding us back into familiar territory: “I’m sure you’ve heard of the Owens family — the ones from Massachusetts, the ones their neighbors whisper are witches.”

It’s been over 25 years since the original film arrived in 1998, and the core problem hasn’t exactly eased with time. The Owens curse still hangs over everything, shaping how these characters live and love. As Sally puts it bluntly to Lee Pace’s character, “Everyone we love dies,” with Gillian adding, “A really horrible death…It’s not great for the Tinder bio.”
A New Generation Steps Into The Magic
This time around, the story expands beyond Sally and Gillian. Joey King and Maisie Williams step in as Sally’s daughters, expanding the focus toward the next generation of Owens women — and the complications that come with inheriting both magic and a curse.
Set against Harry Nilsson’s “Coconut Song,” the footage teases romance, family tension, and something more ominous building beneath the surface. There are clear hints that buried secrets are resurfacing, with new abilities and consequences tied to the family’s past.
One exchange neatly captures that uneasy balance between humour and history. When Gillian insists, “Everything’s going to be okay,” Sally fires back, “Everything’s going to be okay? Just like it was when we had to bury a corpse under a rose bush? That kind of fine, or different?”
CinemaCon Tease: Returning To Something Familiar
The teaser’s arrival follows the film’s CinemaCon presentation last week, where Bullock and Kidman reflected on stepping back into the Owens world.
Kidman pointed to the mix of legacy and forward momentum, saying the film will feature “midnight margaritas, jumping off the roof and also have our past catching up with us,” adding, “We have our destinies, and the family. I think it’s going to be really, really fun.”
Bullock also touched on the emotional pull of returning, saying it “felt like we came back to a home that we once lived in,” noting that the production even rebuilt the original house and filled it with “many old and new characters that you’ll love.”
Cast and Creatives
The sequel is directed by Susanne Bier, who has worked with Kidman on The Undoing and The Perfect Couple, and Bullock on Bird Box.
While Practical Magic 2 shifts from the original film’s director, Griffin Dunne, it does keep some key creative continuity, with Akiva Goldsman returning to co-write alongside Georgia Pritchett. The story draws from Alice Hoffman’s later novel The Book of Magic, expanding the Owens family mythology.
Bullock and Kidman reprise their roles as Sally and Gillian while also producing, joined again by Dianne Wiest and Stockard Channing as the aunts. New additions include Joey King, Maisie Williams, Lee Pace, Xolo Maridueña, and Solly McLeod.
Release Date
Practical Magic 2 is set to be released in Australian cinemas on September 10 and U.S. cinemas on September 11.
