Keanu Reeves could have quite the project lined up for his first series as lead star.

The beloved Matrix and John Wick star has entered negotiations to star in The Devil in the White City, Hulu’s planned series adaptation of Erik Larson’s acclaimed 2003 book of the same name. Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio – the latter of whom purchased the rights to the book back in 2010 – are attached as executive producers.

This is based on the true story of serial killer Herman Webster Mudgett (aka Henry H. Holmes), a murderer and con-artist who has been credited as America’s first serial killer. In the late 1800s, Holmes built a “Murder Castle” on fair grounds and tortured and mutilated young women. The story will also focus on Daniel Burnham, the architect behind the 1893 World’s Fair. It’s still unclear as to whether Reeves is in talks for Holmes or Burnham, or perhaps a different lead character entirely.

This project has been developing for a few years now. At one point it was being put together as a Paramount film to be directed by Scorsese, with DiCaprio circling the killer role, before Hulu came on board as it developed into a limited series. On board to direct the first two episodes is Todd Field, known for Little Children and In the Bedroom. Joining DiCaprio and Scorsese on the producing side of things are Rick Yorn, Sam Shaw, Jennifer Davisson and Stacey Sher.

Reeves can currently be seen reprising his role as Neo in The Matrix Resurrections. On the horizon Reeves has John Wick: Chapter 4, set for March 2023, and DC animated film Super Pets (still unknown what character he’ll voice there.

We’ll keep up to date as The Devil in the White City comes together.
