The trailer has arrived for Project Hail Mary, the upcoming sci-fi adventure from directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, offering a first look at Ryan Gosling as an amnesiac science teacher tasked with saving Earth. Watch the trailer above and learn more below.
Based on the bestselling novel by The Martian author Andy Weir, the film tells of a middle school teacher (Gosling) who wakes up alone aboard a spaceship with no memory of who he is or how he got there. As fragments of his memory return, he begins to unravel the purpose of his mission: to stop a mysterious cosmic threat that is slowly killing the sun. Armed only with scientific knowledge and an unorthodox mind, he faces the impossible task of saving humanity. Fortunately, he may not be as alone as he thinks. Joining Gosling in the cast are Sandra Hüller (Anatomy of a Fall), Lionel Boyce, Ken Leung, and Milana Vayntrub.

The teaser trailer plays up the film’s blend of high-concept science fiction and heart, with Hüller’s character warning, “The sun is not the only star dying,” while Grace recoils at the stakes. “I understand the stakes — I do,” he says. “But my place is in the classroom.” The trailer also teases the arrival of an alien presence — a pivotal plot element that becomes central to the film’s emotional arc.
Gosling, who also serves as a producer, described the project at CinemaCon as “an insanely ambitious story that’s massive in scope,” adding with a laugh, “We tried to put it on a TV once — it wouldn’t fit.”
The screenplay adaptation was penned by Drew Goddard, who also adapted Weir’s The Martian for the screen. That particular adaptation was directed by Ridley Scott and became a critical and commercial hit—earning over $630 million globally and landing seven Oscar nominations. It remains Scott’s highest-grossing film to date.
Project Hail Mary marks Lord and Miller’s first feature directing gig since 22 Jump Street (2014) and their return to live-action after departing Solo: A Star Wars Story. Their acclaimed animation work includes writing and directing Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs (2009) and The LEGO Movie (2014), producing and writing Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018) and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023), and producing The Mitchells vs. the Machines (2021).
The film, with cinematography by Dune’s Greig Fraser, is shaping up to be a major 2026 tentpole for Amazon MGM Studios.
Project Hail Mary is set to hit U.S. cinemas on March 20, 2026. Sony Pictures will release the film in Australian cinemas in the same month, although an exact date has yet to be announced.
