The trailer has been released for Project Power, a sci-fi action film led by Jamie Foxx, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Dominique Fishback (The Hate U Give, The Deuce). The film is set in New Orleans and tells of a crazy new drug that’s hitting the streets. It’s a pill that can give you five minutes of superpowers, although you don’t know what those powers will be or how they’ll affect you until it hits. An ex-soldier (Foxx), a local cop (Levitt) and a teen dealer (Fishback) find themselves teaming up to take on those who have big plans for this pill.
It’s slick-looking stuff. Plenty of visuals effects and action in the high-energy trailer below, plus there’s the obvious appeal of having Foxx and Levitt as leads. Taking a dose of this one, for sure.
The film is directed by Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman, who broke out with “documentary” Catfish before going on to direct Paranormal Activity 3 and 4, Viral and Nerve. The original screenplay – yep, it’s actually not based on a comic book or graphic novel – comes from Mattson Tomlin, co-writer of upcoming DC film The Batman.
Also starring Machine Gun Kelly, Rodrigo Santoro, Amy Landecker, Allen Maldonado and Courtney B. Vance, among others, Project Power will be streaming on Netflix from August 14th.
Official synopsis for Project Power:
On the streets of New Orleans, word begins to spread about a mysterious new pill that unlocks superpowers unique to each user. The catch: You don’t know what will happen until you take it. While some develop bulletproof skin, invisibility, and super strength, others exhibit a deadlier reaction. But when the pill escalates crime within the city to dangerous levels, a local cop (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) teams with a teenage dealer (Dominique Fishback) and a former soldier fueled by a secret vendetta (Jamie Foxx) to fight power with power and risk taking the pill in order to track down and stop the group responsible for creating it.
