The first trailer has arrived for the The Purge series, an extension of the Blumhouse-produced horror-thriller film franchise written and directed by James DeMonaco.

Set before the previous Purge films and after the upcoming origins film The First Purge, the series will be following several seemingly unrelated characters as they attempt to endure the titular 12-hour period, when all crime, including murder, is legal.

The pilot is being directed by Anthony Hemingway (American Horror Story, Shameless), who’s also attached as exec producer. Showrunner/exec producer is Thomas Kelly, whose credits include Blue Bloods, Copper and The Get Down. Most of the team behind the films is on board here: Jason Blum is spearheading the series, DeMonaco is writing and executive producing, and Michael Bay, Brad Fuller and Andrew Form are exec producing under the Platinum Dunes banner.

The films are relatively small budgeted productions, which means the overall style can translate pretty well to the small screen. As the trailer shows, if you’re a fan of the films, you should be in safe hands with this 10-episode event series.

It’s a good time to be a fan: the series begins on USA Network on September 4 and the next film, The First Purge, opens in the U.S. cinemas on July 4 and arrives in Australia on August 2.
