The long-gestating Freddie Mercury biopic is finally coming together, with Rami Malek in the lead no less.
Dexter Fletcher (Eddie the Eagle) was attached to direct Ben Whishaw in a biopic on the life of the Queen lead back in late 2013. Fletcher left the project in 2014, and things remained a little quite until Sacha Baron Cohen came on board in early 2015. That wasn’t too last, with Cohen revealing earlier this year that his idea for the Freddie Mercury biopic wasn’t in line with what the remaining Queen band members had in mind.
Well, at long last, it looks like the GK Films project is set to go ahead with director Bryan Singer at the helm. Deadline is reporting that the X-Men: Days of Future Past and X-Men: Apocalypse director has entered to talks to bring the biopic to life. And Mr. Robot star Rami Malek has scored himself the lead role.
The screenplay comes from Anthony McCarten, who earned himself Best Picture (producing) and Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar nominations with 2014’s The Theory of Everything.
This is shaping up to be quite the project. Apart from attracting Malek and Singer, New Regency and Fox are reportedly coming on board to co-produce the biopic alongside producer Graham King’s (The Departed) GK Films.
Singer took to Instagram to confirm the news:
