While it has been hard to come by any sort of news regarding the next Star Wars film, the official Star Wars blog has announced that a classic character will be returning in the next chapter. R2-D2, the much-loved astromech droid, will officially be a part of Star Wars: Episode VII.
The news was teased at first with the above image, tweeted by J.J. Abrams’ production company. To the left is Abrams and to the right is Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy. The two men in the middle? Lee Towersey and Oliver Steeples, two fans and members of the R2-D2 builder club who were lucky enough to be chosen to be a part of the Creature Effects team for Star Wars: Episode VII. They were recommended for the job after Kathleen Kennedy saw their work at the “R2-D2 Builders area” in Germany.
“We’re currently in a research and design phase where we’re looking at drive options for reliability on all possible terrains,” says Towersey. “Whether it be a one-motor-does-all, or a system which is easily adjusted depending on terrain. We have a few mocked up ideas which we hope to road test very soon.”
These lucky fans now have the responsibility of helping bring us a loved character from one of the world’s biggest franchises. No pressure.
