Two-time Oscar nominee Ralph Fiennes will be playing one bully of a headmistress in this Netflix co-production.
The actor has been cast as Miss Trunchbull in Netflix and Working Title’s Matilda, an adaptation of the hit Matilda The Musical – which is in turn an adaptation of Roald Dahl’s classic 1988 book. For those wondering, the stage musical’s version of Trunchbull is also played by a man.
The story tells of precocious 5-year-old girl Matilda, who has the gift of telekinesis. The book-loving girl takes on various obstacles caused by her family and school, and helps her teacher to reclaim her life.
The new film will will be a musical and is to be directed by the stage production’s original director, Matthew Warchus (Pride). The show’s Tony award-winning writer, Dennis Kelly, is on board to pen the script.

Many will of course remember the 1996 film adaptation, also titled Matilda. Directed by Danny DeVito, who was also the narrator and played Mr. Wormwood, the film starred Mara Wilson as the titular girl and had Pam Ferris in the role of Trunchbull.
This will be but one of the Dahl adaptations heading to Netflix. As was announced in November 2018, the streaming giant has a deal with The Roald Dahl Story Company to craft projects based on the author’s bestsellers – Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The BFG, and The Twits among them.
