Take a look at the teaser trailer that Disney has released for Raya and the Last Dragon, a CG-animated fantasy-adventure inspired by Southeast Asian cultures from Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Myanmar, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Laos.
The film is set in the fantasy world of Kumandra, where humans and dragons once lived together in harmony until the dragons sacrificed themselves to save humanity from evil. 500 years later, the evil has returned, and it falls to lone warrior Raya (voiced by Kelly Marie Tran, who you may know as Rose Tico from Star Wars) to find the last dragon. Awkwafina voices Sisu, a water dragon who can transform into a human being.
Another big animated hit is likely on the way for Disney. The teaser shows off some beautiful animation and design work, plus there’s the confidence that comes with the studio’s recent efforts wonderfully incorporating cultural influence – Moana (Polynesia) and Coco (Mexico) were both fantastic.
The film is directed by Don Hall (co-director of Moana and Big Hero 6) and Carlos López Estrada (Blindspotting), with a screenplay by Adele Lim (Crazy Rich Asians) and Qui Nguyen (The Society).
Raya and the Last Dragon will be opening in US cinemas on March 12 and Australian cinemas on March 25, 2021.
Official synopsis for Raya and the Last Dragon:
Long ago, in the fantasy world of Kumandra, humans and dragons lived together in harmony. But when an evil force threatened the land, the dragons sacrificed themselves to save humanity. Now, 500 years later, that same evil has returned and it’s up to a lone warrior, Raya, to track down the legendary last dragon to restore the fractured land and its divided people. However, along her journey, she’ll learn that it’ll take more than a dragon to save the world—it’s going to take trust and teamwork as well.
From directors Don Hall and Carlos López Estrada, co-directors Paul Briggs and John Ripa, producers Osnat Shurer and Peter Del Vecho, and featuring the voices of Kelly Marie Tran as Raya and Awkwafina as the last dragon Sisu, Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “Raya and the Last Dragon” opens in Australian cinemas March 25, 2021.
