Ready or Not fans can rejoice: the much-anticipated sequel to the 2019 horror hit is officially on the way!
The announcement came during a special Searchlight Pictures screening hosted by Radio Silence, aka Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, the directorial duo behind the original. The exciting news was also shared in a playful social media video where the filmmakers step aside to reveal star Samara Weaving, who cheerfully declares, “Here we come. Number 2!”
The creative team behind the original film is returning for the sequel, with Guy Busick and Ryan Murphy (not to be confused with the American Horror Story creator of the same name) set to pen the script. The duo will also serve as executive producers alongside Chad Villella and Tara Farney. Producers for the project include Tripp Vinson, Bradley J. Fischer, William Sherak, and James Vanderbilt.
No plot details have yet been announced. Nor have details on principal photography or planned release dates.
The original Ready or Not followed a thrilling and violent tale as Grace (played by Weaving), a young bride, found herself in a deadly game of survival on her wedding night, battling her new in-laws. The film was a box office hit, earning $28.7 million domestically and $57.6 million worldwide on a modest $6 million budget. Its blend of dark humour, horror, and suspense turned it into a cult favourite and helped launch Radio Silence’s career to new heights in Hollywood.
Ready or Not left audiences with questions about what happens next for Weaving’s character, Grace, who survived the nightmarish ordeal. In a 2019 interview with ComicBook.com, Weaving speculated about Grace’s future. “I wonder what happens afterwards. Does she go to jail? Does she go to an asylum for psychiatric help? Does she inherit everything? I don’t know.” If the police do find Grace guilty, Weaving jokingly imagined, the sequel could simply find the character “sitting in a jail cell for 90 minutes, just going insane.”
Since their success with Ready or Not, Radio Silence has gone on to direct the recent 2022 Scream reboot, the 2023 follow-up Scream VI, and this year’s entertaining vampire comedy Abigail.
