Our first big look at Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One has arrived.
Based on the much-loved sci-fi novel of the same name by Ernest Cline, Ready Player One is set in 2045 and tells of Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan), a boy who decides to join a massive digital Easter egg hunt in the OASIS, an expansive virtual reality universe.
It’s yet another exciting trailer to come out of Comic-Con. This highly anticipated adaptation looks visually spectacular, the trailer showcasing gorgeous production design and strong VFX. There’s a lot to take whenever we hit OASIS, including a heap of easter eggs (The Iron Giant, Freddy Kruger, a freakin’ DeLorean time machine) that will give that pause button a good work out. Most importantly, it looks like Spielberg is using a freeing canvas to deliver imaginative fun, when this could have just afforded him a vehicle to drive home a nostalgia fest.
Ready Player One, also starring Olivia Cooke, Ben Mendelsohn, T.J. Miller, Simon Pegg, and Mark Rylance, arrives in Australian cinemas on March 29, 2018 and opens in the U.S. on March 30, 2018.
