Jennifer Lawrence may soon be starring in Red Sparrow, an adaptation of Jason Matthews’ espionage novel that could see her reunite with The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Parts 1 and 2 director Francis Lawrence.
According to Deadline, Red Sparrow has been developed as a starring vehicle for Lawrence, although there’s been no deal put on the table as yet.
The novel tells the story of Dominika Egorova, a state intelligence officer in contemporary Russia. She is forced to become a “Sparrow,” a trained seductress, and is placed on a mission against Nathanial Nash, a new CIA officer assigned to handle the penetration of Russian intelligence. The two end up colliding in what Deadline describes as “a charged atmosphere of trade craft, deception, and inevitably, a sexual attraction that threatens their careers and the security of America’s valuable mole in Moscow.”
American Hustle screenwriter Eric Warren penned the initial script, and Revolutionary Road scribe Justin Haythe is now being brought in for a rewrite.
Director Lawrence, whose credits also include Constantine, I Am Legend, Water for Elephants, and The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, is said to be close to signing a deal.
We’ll keep you informed as to how this one develops.
The next film from the director and actress will be the highly anticipated final chapter in The Hunger Games franchise, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2. The film will open in Australia on November 19 and the U.S. on November 20.
