20th Century Fox has dropped the first trailer for Red Sparrow, an upcoming thriller that sees Oscar winner Jennifer Lawrence playing a Russian spy.
Lawrence stars as Dominika Egorova, a prima ballerina whose life changes when she suffers a career-ending injury. With her and her mother facing an uncertain future, Dominika soon finds herself recruited to ‘Sparrow School’, a Russian intelligence service where she is forced to use her body as a weapon. Her first target: a CIA agent.
The film reunites Lawrence with director Francis Lawrence, who directed The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and both Mockingjay – Part 1 and Part 2. The filmmaker, whose credits include Constantine, I Am Legend and Water for Elephants, could have a solid thriller here. The trailer doesn’t give away too much in terms of narrative, but it does show off what looks like a slick production and a pretty brutal tone. It’s also providing JLaw with a potentially meaty role; perhaps giving her own Atomic Blonde type franchise starter if all goes well?
Scribes Justin Haythe (Revolutionary Road, A Cure for Wellness) and Eric Warren Singer (The International, American Hustle) adapted the 2013 novel of the same name written by former CIA Operations Directorate Jason Matthews. Matthews published a sequel, Palace of Treason, in 2015. A third Egorova-focused book, The Kremlin’s Candidate, will be published in 2018.
Red Sparrow, also starring Joel Edgerton, Mary-Louise Parker, Matthias Schoenaerts, Jeremy Irons, Ciarán Hinds, Charlotte Rampling and Joely Richardson, will arrive in Australia on March 1 and opens in the US on March 2, 2018.
Official synopsis for Red Sparrow:
Dominika Egorova is many things.
A devoted daughter determined to protect her mother at all costs.
A prima ballerina whose ferocity has pushed her body and mind to the absolute limit.
A master of seductive and manipulative combat.
When she suffers a career-ending injury, Dominika and her mother are facing a bleak and uncertain future. That is why she finds herself manipulated into becoming the newest recruit for Sparrow School, a secret intelligence service that trains exceptional young people like her to use their bodies and minds as weapons. After enduring the perverse and sadistic training process, she emerges as the most dangerous Sparrow the program has ever produced. Dominika must now reconcile the person she was with the power she now commands, with her own life and everyone she cares about at risk, including an American CIA agent who tries to convince her he is the only person she can trust.
