Welcome back to Reel Weekly,

This week on the site we take a look at those stars that made the successful transition to behind the camera in our list of Top Ten Actors Turned Directors. On the other side of the spectrum we discuss Fateful Findings, the latest film to join the ranks of The Room or Plan 9 from Outer Space in the ‘So bad it’s good’ club.

In reviews we take a look Renoir, which tells the story of Andree Heuschling, the last model to work for the impressionist painter, Pierre-Auguste Renoir.   • Grace Kelly biopic Grace of Monaco has run into trouble due to disagreements over the film’s final cut. Originally slated for a November release, the film has now been pushed back to spring with Director Olivier Dahan refusing to make the cuts insisted on by The Weinstein Co. Read more


  • Production has begun on David Koepp‘s action-comedy Mortdecai. Based on the anthology novels by Kyril Bonfiglioli, the film will star Johnny Depp as he tries to track down a stolen painting that could lead to a stash of Nazi Gold. Read more


  • Paul Feig (director of Bridemaids and The Heat) is set to produce an animated feature based on Charles Schulz’s classic comic strip Peanuts. Steve Martino (Dr. Seuss’ Horton Hears A Who!, Ice Age: Continental Drift) is attached to direct the screenplay written by Shulz’s son Craig. Read more


  • Director JJ Abrams and Lawrence Kasdan have taken over writing duties for the upcoming Star Wars film. Kasdan, who wrote the screenplay for Raiders of The Lost Ark and co-wrote both Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, is a boon to those hoping to see a return to the form of classic Lucas films.   • Stephen Lang will be returning as the villainous Col. Miles Quaritch for the Avatar sequels. The first of James Cameron‘s sequels to the 2009 blockbuster is set for release in 2016, so he should have some time to figure out how he’ll bring him back from the dead. Read more

  • Halle Berry and Looper’s Pierce Gagnon have been cast in CBS’ new sci-if series Extant. Berry will play a returning astronaut named Molly in the Steven Spielberg produced series, with Gagnon playing a role whose importance will be slowly revealed over time. Read more


  • It’s been confirmed that Tom Hardy will be starring in the Elton John biopic Rocketman. The story of the musical prodigy will be directed by Michael Gracey and written by Lee Hall. Read more


  • Following Charlie Hunnam leaving last week, Jamie Dornan has been cast for the lead role in 50 Shades of Grey. Best known for his role in ABC’s Once Upon a Time, Dornan joins Dakota Johnson in the Sam Taylor-Johnson directed adaption of the erotic best-seller. Read more



  • Octavia Spencer is set to star in NBC’s Murder, She Wrote reboot. Writer Alexander Cunningham and producer David Jonollari are charged with reviving the 12 season CBS hit. Read more


  • FOX has given a full season order to the Adam Samberg police comedy Brooklyn 99. FOX Entertainment chairman Kevin Reilly has expressed that he is pleased with the critical reception of the series, and expects it to be around for a long time. Read more
