A new Bewitched series is coming to television.
The comedy-fantasy series that aired on ABC from 1964 – 1972 is to be reimagined, according to a report by Deadline.
Sony Pictures TV started shopping a new take on Bewitched last week, and NBC has picked it up with a pilot production commitment. NBC beat out original network ABC in what apparently was quite a competitive bidding situation.
The original series told of a witch, Samantha (Elizabeth Montgomery), who can’t resist using her powers to try and solve her family’s problems.
A 1977 spin-off series focused on Samantha’s daughter, Tabitha.
Deadline reports the new take will reimagine the original story two generations later and will follow Samantha’s granddaughter, Daphne. A single twenty-something witch, Daphne “has always used her magical powers to conjure herself the perfect life. But she soon realizes that the one thing she cannot conjure and control is the one thing she wants most — real love.”
Screenwriters Abby Kohn and Marc Silverstein, who had quite the hit with the romantic drama The Vow, have penned the modern reimagining.
Nicole Kidman and Will Ferrell starred in an ill-received 2005 film version of the same name.
