Oscar winner Renée Zellweger will be taking on her first lead role in a series, a Netflix original titled What/If.
Described as a “social thriller,” What/If is to be an anthology series with each season tackling a different morality tale inspired by what Netflix calls “culturally consequential source material.” The series will be exploring the ripple effects of what happens when acceptable people start doing unacceptable things and how one fateful decision can change the trajectory of an entire life.
Deadline reports that the first season will be focusing on two struggling newlyweds who decide to accept a perilous financial proposition by a powerful venture capitalist, Anne (Zellweger). Anne is charming and magnetic, but also highly deceptive and carries a ton of destructive secrets.
Writer/showrunner on the series is Mike Kelley, who created Revenge and Swingtown and whose writing credits include One Tree Hill and The O.C. Kelley is on board as executive producer alongside Oscar winning filmmaker Robert Zemeckis, Melissa Loy (Page Fright), Alex Gartner, Charles Roven (Atlas Entertainment) and Jack Rapke (Compari Entertainment).
Zellweger has signed a one-year series regular deal for What/If, which will have a first season run of 10 one-hour episodes. Stay tuned.
