Jennifer Hudson is Aretha Franklin in ‘Respect’ Trailer

Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson (Dreamgirls) plays the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin, in the upcoming biopic Respect.

The teaser trailer has arrived for the film, which follows the rise of the much-loved singer from her time in her father’s church choir as a child to her meteoric rise in the music world, becoming an international superstar and civil rights activist.

This marks the feature debut for Liesl Tommy, whose previous credits include television series such as The Walking Dead and Jessica Jones. The screenplay comes from Tracey Scott Wilson, who’s also known from the television realm with credits including The Americans and Fosse/Verdon.

Respect, also starring Forest Whitaker as C.L. Franklin, Marlon Wayans as Ted White, Marc Maron as Jerry Wexler, D. Tituss Burgess as Rev. Dr. James Cleveland, and Mary J. Blige as Dinah Washington, among others, will have a limited U.S. release on Christmas Day before going wide on January 15 – Martin Luther King Jr. weekend. The film arrives in Australia sometime in 2021.
