‘Revelations’ Trailer Unveils Dark South Korean Thriller from ‘Train to Busan’ Director

Netflix has released the official trailer for Revelations, an upcoming South Korean thriller directed by Train to Busan and Hellbound helmer Yeon Sang-ho. The film marks a departure from Yeon’s previous supernatural-infused works, opting instead for a psychological exploration of faith, belief, and moral corruption. Take a look at the trailer above and learn more below.

A Psychological Dive into Faith and Obsession

At the centre of Revelations is Pastor Sung Min-chan, a man who believes he has a divine duty to punish the culprit behind a missing-person case. His path collides with Detective Lee Yeon-hui, a relentless investigator haunted by visions of her deceased sister. Their opposing but equally obsessive beliefs push them down a dark, intertwining road.

Yeon Sang-ho, known for blending genre storytelling with deep thematic undercurrents, strips away fantasy elements in Revelations to focus on psychological and existential horror. “Many of the live-action films I’ve worked on deal with surreal themes in fantasy worlds,” Yeon told Netflix site Tudum. “But this time, I ruled out fantasy elements as much as possible. I wanted to depict psychological elements that can be found in reality, such as illusions, delusions, and traumas.”

Co-written by Choi Gyu-seok (The Awl), the film adapts their 2022 comic of the same name. Choi revealed that the story stemmed from Yeon’s long-standing interest in faith and belief systems. “I was intrigued and thought that we could come up with a fascinating story,” he shared.

Alfonso Cuarón Joins as Executive Producer

Adding further weight to the project is Oscar-winning filmmaker Alfonso Cuarón (Children of Men, Roma, Gravity), who serves as an executive producer. Yeon recalled Cuarón’s deep respect for the film, stating, “I showed him the first edited version, and I remember him saying that he didn’t want to watch it on a computer monitor. He made a point of watching it in a screening room. [He’s] a creator who truly shows respect for the director’s vision.”

A Stellar South Korean Cast

Leading the cast is Ryu Jun-yeol – whose credits include A Taxi Driver and The 8 Show – as Pastor Sung Min-chan, bringing what Yeon describes as “exceptional acting skills” and a meticulous approach to understanding his character. Opposite him, Shin Hyun-been (Hospital Playlist, Reborn Rich) plays Detective Lee Yeon-hui, a character screenwriter Choi describes as “imbued with sadness that could crush her at any moment.” Rounding out the core cast is Shin Min-jae (JUNG_E, Parasyte: The Grey) as Kwon Yang-rae, a criminal whose actions place him between the two leads.
