A new Ricki and the Flash trailer has been released by Sony Pictures, giving us a new look at the upcoming Meryl Streep-starring dramedy written by Oscar winning screenwriter Diablo Cody (Juno).
Ricki and the Flash sees Streep playing a rock singer and guitarist who is forced to face the mistakes she made when she left her family behind to follow her rock-and-roll dreams. Pushed to return home when her daughter (played by Meryl’s real-life daughter) loses her man, she is given a shot to make things right.
Jonathan Demme has had one varied career, going from Married to the Mob to The Silence of the Lambs, to Philadelphia to Rachel Getting Married. We’re really hoping that Ricki and the Flash sees Demme recapturing that quality he’s occasionally shown in the past, and that Cody finds that original gusto that brought her fame with Juno. This looks mildly amiable, but there’s an unfortunate air of been-there-done-that plaguing every emotional beat in this spoiler-filled trailer. We’ll see.
Ricki and the Flash, starring Meryl Streep, Kevin Kline, Mamie Gummer, Audra McDonald, Sebastian Stan and Rick Springfield, hits the U.S. on August 7 and Australia on August 13.
