Ride Along, the comedy starring Ice Cube and Kevin Hart, has raked in over $120 million in worldwide box-office receipts so far. I guess we all know what that means.
Deadline is reporting that Ride Along 2 is moving forward nicely, with Ride Along director Tim Story (Barbershop, Fantastic Four) set to return at the helm. Ice Cube and Kevin Hart are closing in to reprise their roles as the quick-witted security guard Ben Barver (Hart) who has his eye on cop James Payton’s (Cube’s) sister.
Universal is determined to have a repeat performance of the first film’s success, to the point where they’re simply rebooting contracts. Two of the four writers used on Ride Along, Phil Hay and Matt Manfredi, have been confirmed to pen the sequel, with Will Packer (Rainforest Films) and Cube’s Cube Vision (Ice Cube and Matt Alvarez) coming back to produce.
The sequel “is expected to have more action” and will be “more multi-cultural” in an effort to bring in as wide a demographic as possible.
Production on Ride Along 2 is expected to begin in late June/early July.
Hart has many movies in the pipeline, including Get Hard, were he’ll star opposite Will Ferrell, and Wedding Ringer, where he’ll star opposite Josh Gad. Cube will next be seen reprising his role as Captain Dickson in 22 Jump Street.
