Netflix has released the official trailer for Rivers of Fate, a Brazilian limited series that looks raw and tense. Watch the trailer above and read on for what to expect.
Set in the Pará region of Brazil, Rivers of Fate (also titled Pssica) follows Janalice (Domithila Cattete), a teenager who is kidnapped by a gang operating along the riverways. As she’s pulled into the centre of a trafficking network, the story expands to include Preá (Lucas Galvino), a gang leader caught in a life he didn’t choose, and Mariangel (Marleyda Soto), who is on a mission to avenge her family.

Each character believes they’ve been marked by a curse — a “pssica” — and the series follows their intersecting attempts to survive, escape, or undo the damage that’s been done.
The series is based on the novel Pssica by Edyr Augusto, and it’s directed by Fernando Meirelles (City of God, The Two Popes) and his son Quico Meirelles (Joint Venture). The screenplay comes from Bráulio Mantovani, Fernando Garrido, and Stephanie Degreas.
The trailer presents a fast-cut look at the world Janalice has been thrown into — the violence, the riverbound criminal networks, and the urgency of her situation. While she fights to survive, others are closing in from different angles, some to save her, others with different motives entirely.
This looks to be a character-focused drama that’s unflinching in its subject matter — dealing with human trafficking, organised crime, and loss. The cast also features Ademara, Bruno Goya, Claudio Jaborandy, Luca Dan, Ricardo Teodoro, Sandro Guerra, Welket Bungué, and Wesley Guimarães.
Rivers of Fate premieres globally on Netflix on August 20.
