Apple has lined up quite a strong cast for a new Original Series.
Nicole Kidman, Alison Brie, Cynthia Erivo and Merritt Wever have signed up to star in Roar, an anthology series adaptation of a book of short stories by author Cecelia Ahern. Kidman will also be on board as executive producer via her Blossom Films banner.
As Apple announced, the series will tell darkly comic feminist fables in eight half-hour genre-bending episodes, told from a uniquely female point of view. There’s no description as to what story each episode will tell, although perhaps this excerpt from the book’s description – on Ahern’s website – can shed some light:
In matters ranging from marriage and childrearing to politics and career, the heroines of these thought-provoking stories confront problems both mysterious and mundane: one woman is tortured by sinister bite marks that appear on her skin; another is swallowed up by the floor during a mortifying presentation; yet another resolves to return and exchange her boring husband at the store where she originally acquired him.
The series is created and will be showrun and executive produced by Liz Flahive and Carly Mensch, who were also behind Alison Brie-starring Netflix series GLOW (frustratingly cancelled in October 2020). Roar marks the first project to hit screens under the overall deal Flahive and Mesch have at Apple.
More cast members are to be announced. Stay tuned…
