‘Running Point’ Scores a Season 2 Renewal at Netflix—Kate Hudson: “I’m Just Beyond Thrilled”

Good news for fans of Netflix series Running Point.

Netflix has officially renewed the Kate Hudson-led basketball comedy series for a second season, marking one of the streamer’s fastest renewals for a first-year show. The decision comes just a week after the series debuted on February 27, during which it amassed 9.3 million views and secured a spot in Netflix’s Top 10 across 83 countries.

“We are so thrilled to be able to deliver a season 2 of Running Point to the fans of the show,” co-creator and executive producer Mindy Kaling said in a statement provided by Netflix site Tudum. “We still cannot believe the response from audiences—thank you to everyone who has watched!” Kaling also extended gratitude to Netflix, Warner Bros., lead star Hudson, and executive producers Jeanie Buss and Linda Rambis, saying, “Without [them], there would be no Running Point.”

Hudson shared the news in a video on social media, saying, “A good basketball team owner knows when to listen to the fans. So, we hear you and so did Netflix. Running Point is officially coming back for season 2! Thank you so much everyone who watched the show so far. I’m just beyond thrilled because you’re really the reason why we’re able to come back and do another season.”

The series, inspired by the real-life experiences of Los Angeles Lakers president Jeanie Buss, follows Isla Gordon (Hudson), a woman thrust into the high-stakes world of professional basketball after her brother’s scandal forces him to step down as president of the Los Angeles Waves. As the new head of the family business, Isla must navigate the male-dominated sports industry while proving her worth to skeptical board members, her ambitious brothers, and the larger basketball community.

Alongside Hudson, the show’s cast includes Brenda Song, Drew Tarver, Scott MacArthur, Max Greenfield, Jay Ellis, and Justin Theroux, among others. The show’s creative team features Kaling as a writer and executive producer alongside Ike Barinholtz and David Stassen, with Stassen also serving as showrunner. Jeanie Buss and Linda Rambis remain on board as executive producers.

While Netflix has yet to reveal specific plot details for the upcoming season, Season 1 set the stage for further drama and comedic conflict within the Waves organisation. A release date for the next chapter has not yet been announced.
