‘Running Point’ Trailer: Kate Hudson is in Charge of a Basketball Team in Netflix Comedy Series

Netflix has released the first trailer for Running Point, an upcoming comedy series starring Kate Hudson as the unexpected owner of a professional basketball team.  Take a look above.

The Plot

Hudson stars as Isla Gordon, a Los Angeles executive who suddenly finds herself in charge of the Los Angeles Waves after her older brother—played by Justin Theroux—flames out in spectacular fashion. Having spent years being overlooked within her own family, Isla must prove she’s capable of running the team, despite doubts from the board, the media, and her own brothers.

“I’ve been eager to dive into something comedic with a team I admire, and this role offered a fresh challenge and was hilarious and engaging right from the start,” Hudson told Netflix site Tudum. “The chance to work with people I respect and to bring a unique female perspective to a male-driven world was incredibly appealing.”

Co-creator Mindy Kaling (The Office, The Sex Lives of College Girls, The Mindy Project), described her approach: “I really love writing shows about ambitious women, whether they’re a 15-year-old girl in the Valley [Never Have I Ever] or the president of a basketball team. We wanted to ensure that audiences could see themselves in the characters’ struggles and triumphs.”

The Cast

Alongside Hudson, Running Point features an ensemble cast that includes Drew Tarver and Scott MacArthur as Isla’s brothers, each with their own stake in the family business. Tarver plays Sandy, the financially savvy yet socially awkward CFO, while MacArthur’s Ness is the team’s general manager—an ex-player with more enthusiasm than strategy.

Brenda Song plays Ali Lee, the Waves’ no-nonsense chief of staff and Isla’s college roommate, who knows the franchise inside and out. Max Greenfield stars as Isla’s fiancé, while Jay Ellis appears as the team’s head coach. On the player side, Toby Sandeman portrays the team’s star athlete, Chet Hanks plays a point guard with distractions off the court, and Uche Agada plays a rookie eager to make his mark.

The Behind-the-Scenes Team

The series brings together a team with experience in both comedy and sports storytelling. Kaling co-created the show alongside Ike Barinholtz (Blockers, Central Intelligence) and David Stassen (The Mindy Project, Central Intelligence) with Stassen serving as showrunner. Executive producers include Hudson, Howard Klein, and Los Angeles Lakers president Jeanie Buss, whose real-world experience running a major franchise played a key role in shaping the story.

.“Having known Jeanie since I was a teenager, I felt a unique connection to the character,” said Hudson, speaking about Buss’s influence on the show. “Jeanie’s life and career in the male-dominated world of professional basketball are inspiring, and her willingness to let us explore a comedic version of that world was liberating. Jeanie’s openness and sense of humour allowed us to push boundaries and have fun with the character.”
