Ryan Gosling in Talks for a ‘Star Wars’ Film from the Director of ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’

Ryan Gosling may soon be trading some of that Ken-ergy for the Force. There are reports that the Oscar-nominated actor has entered negotiations to star in an upcoming Star Wars film – one with Shawn Levy (director of Deadpool & Wolverine, executive producer on Stranger Things) at the helm.

Levy has been developing the mystery project since 2022, in collaboration with writer Jonathan Tropper, whose credits include Levy-directed films This Is Where I Leave You and The Adam Project. While details about the film are tightly guarded, there are whispers that it will be a standalone story, disconnected from the Skywalker Saga.

The Hollywood Reporter was the first to break the news, reporting that Gosling’s potential involvement is pushing Levy to prioritise this Star Wars venture over other planned projects. At least according to his IMDB page, Levy’s timeline includes a Ryan Reynolds-starring comedy titled Boy Band and a long-in-the-works remake of 1949 sci-fi film Starman.

Deadline later confirmed the report, adding weight to speculation that production could begin as early as this autumn (US season). If that timeline holds, Levy’s film would become the next Star Wars project to enter production – moving ahead of a December 2027 release that’s already slated for a still-untitled Lucasfilm feature.

Gosling’s casting would mark a rare instance of a big-name A-lister leading a film in the long-running franchise, breaking from the Star Wars tradition of spotlighting emerging talent or relatively unknown actors. This actually isn’t the first time that Gosling’s name has been linked to this galaxy; there were rumours back in 2013 that he was being considered for a part in J.J. Abrams’ Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

As of yet, there’s no official word from Disney or Lucasfilm. We’ll keep you informed.
