Ryan Reynolds has offered the clearest hint yet about where Deadpool may be heading next, and it sounds like the Merc with a Mouth might not be taking centre stage again anytime soon.
After Deadpool & Wolverine became a major hit, plenty of fans assumed the next move would be a straightforward Deadpool 4. But Reynolds seems to have something a little different in mind for Marvel’s foul-mouthed anti-hero.
Deadpool’s Future May Be As Part Of A Team
Speaking during an appearance on Sunday Today, Reynolds said he has already been thinking ahead. “I have some stuff kind of written,” he revealed. But if anyone is expecting Deadpool to charge back in as the sole main attraction, Reynolds poured a bit of cold water on that idea.

“I don’t think I’m going to center him again. I think he’s a supporting character, you know?” Reynolds said. He went on to describe Deadpool as “a guy that’s great in a group,” which certainly makes it sound like he sees the character working better as part of an ensemble than carrying another solo film on his own.
Why Reynolds Seems Ready To Shift Gears
This thinking lines up with comments Reynolds has made before. While reflecting on the character’s future, he previously explained that there’s only so many times you can build the same kind of Deadpool story before it starts to feel too familiar.
“Centering Deadpool works best if you take everything away from him and put his back against the wall. I can’t really do that again,” Reynolds said in an earlier interview. “A fourth time feels a little iterative and redundant.”
That does not mean he sees the character as creatively finished. Reynolds has also made it clear he still believes there is a worthwhile and satisfying arc left to explore with Deadpool, just not necessarily one where he remains the uncontested lead.
What This Could Mean For The MCU
Naturally, those comments will only add more fuel to the speculation around where Deadpool could turn up next. Reynolds has already played down rumours linking him to Avengers: Doomsday, saying he has not “stepped foot on set,” but his latest comments do make the bigger picture feel a little easier to read.
If Deadpool is no longer being viewed as the centrepiece of his own next chapter, then dropping into a larger Marvel story, especially one tied to mutants, multiverse chaos, or legacy characters, starts to sound a lot more plausible.
For now, Marvel has not announced a fourth Deadpool film, and Reynolds does not sound especially eager to force one into existence just for the sake of it. At least at this point, Deadpool’s future looks less like another solo spotlight and more like popping up in the middle of someone else’s madness, which, honestly, may be exactly where he works best.
