A Saints Row movie, based on the hit open-world video game franchise, is now in development.
The live-action film adaptation is currently being developed by The Fate of the Furious and Straight Outta Compton helmer F. Gary Gray, who will direct. Gray is gearing up for the release of his latest big studio effort, Men in Black: International, starring Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson.
Deadline broke the news, reporting that the Saints Row film will be written by Greg Russo, who is also attached as writer of Resident Evil and Mortal Kombat reboots. Russo’s clearly in high demand.
There have been four Saints Row games so far. The best-selling action-adventure video game series follows the Third Street Saints gang, who reside in the Saints Row district and constantly battle it out with rival gangs in attempts to take over cities Stilwater and Steelport. It’s a violent, adult-oriented series, but it’s far from serious, leaning towards comedy and parody with heavy doses of self-referential humour.

Gray has had quite the journey since kicking off with hip hop music videos for the likes of Cypress Hill and Ice Cube before breaking out with his first feature film, 1995 comedy Friday. His career credits include The Negotiator, The Italian Job (2003), Be Cool, and Law Abiding Citizen.
