Somewhat unexpected names surrounding a reboot of the Saw franchise.
As reported back in May, comedian, writer, producer and actor Chris Rock is behind a new Saw movie being developed at Lionsgate. Rock has crafted the story for the movie, is attached as executive producer, and has a starring role. And now Samuel L. Jackson has signed up.
The film will have Rock playing a police detective investigating a series of grisly crimes; Jackson has been cast as Rock’s father. The cast also includes Max Minghella as Rock’s partner William Schenk and Marisol Nichols as Rock’s boss, Captain Angie Garza.
“We think Samuel L. Jackson and Chris Rock along with Max Minghella and Marisol Nichols make this film completely special in the Saw canon and we can’t wait to unleash this unexpected and sinister new story on fans of this franchise,” Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chairman Joe Drake said in a statement. “This is next level of Saw on full tilt.”
Directing is Darren Lynn Bousman, sticking with the series after having directed Saw II, III and IV. The screenplay comes from Pete Goldfinger and Josh Stolberg, who also wrote 2017’s Jigsaw.
The new Saw film being described as a “reimagining” of the slasher horror franchise that director James Wan kicked off in 2004. Wan, by the way, is also attached as executive producer on the reboot.
