Chris Rock Relaunching ‘Saw’ Franchise

Yep, you read that headline correctly.

Successful comedian, writer, producer and actor Chris Rock will be helping relaunch the Saw franchise. Rock has come up with the concept for the new film, which Lionsgate is describing as a spining-off and reimagining of the horror-thriller film series.

Rock came up with the story and is on board as executive producer; Pete Goldfinger (Jigsaw) and Josh Stolberg (Piranha 3D) wrote the screenplay. On board to direct is Darren Lynn Bousman, sticking with the series after having directed Saw II, III and IV.

“When Chris Rock came to us and described in chilling detail his fantastic vision that reimagines and spins off the world of the notorious Jigsaw Killer, we were all-in,” Lionsgate motion picture group chairman Joe Drake said in a statement.

Saw is one of the highest-grossing horror franchises of all-time, and it’s one of Lionsgate’s most successful film series. This upcoming film will still be as mind-bending and intense as all the previous Saw films. Chris conceived this idea and it will be completely reverential to the legacy of the material while reinvigorating the brand with his wit, creative vision and passion for this classic horror franchise.”

Said Rock: “I’ve been a fan of Saw since the first film in 2004. I am excited by the opportunity to take this to a really intense and twisted new place.”

Lionsgate is moving fast on the project, lining up the film for US release on October 23, 2020. No surprise that the franchise is poised to continue, considering the eight Saw films, including 2017’s Jigsaw, have earned over $US976.3 million worldwide combined.
