‘Schumacher ’94’ Trailer: Netflix Documentary Revisits the Turbulent F1 Season That Launched a Legend

Netflix is heading back to 1994, the year Michael Schumacher went from rising Formula 1 star to world champion — and “Schumi Mania” exploded across Germany. The official trailer has arrived for Schumacher ’94 – The Birth of a Legend, a new documentary zeroing in on the triumph, tragedy and controversy packed into the season that changed everything for the racing icon. Watch the trailer above and get the details below.

The Season That Changed Everything

Netflix previously explored Schumacher’s broader life and career in the 2021 documentary Schumacher. This time, the lens is much tighter: one extraordinary year. And there was more than enough happening in 1994 to fill a film.

Schumacher was just 25 when he opened the Formula 1 season with victory in Brazil for Benetton. Seven more wins followed as he battled Williams driver Damon Hill for the championship, with the fight eventually coming down to a dramatic and deeply controversial finale in Adelaide.

The trailer mixes archival footage with new interviews, capturing a young Schumacher whose profile was suddenly rocketing far beyond the paddock. But the film isn’t interested only in the ruthless competitor behind the wheel.

His wife, Corinna Schumacher, who was his girlfriend during the 1994 season, offers a rare window into the man away from the circuit. “Not many people know Michael the way I know him,” she says in the trailer. Looking back at the year that launched him to another level, she adds: “That was the beginning – the beginning of something great.”

Another moment turns to the very real dangers surrounding the sport, with footage from the turbulent season accompanying Corinna’s recollection: “That was the first time we thought, ‘This is actually dangerous.’”

A Championship Born in a Turbulent Year

The season that delivered Schumacher’s breakthrough title was also one of the darkest and most chaotic in Formula 1 history. The San Marino Grand Prix weekend at Imola saw the deaths of Roland Ratzenberger and Ayrton Senna, tragedies that shook the sport and cast a heavy shadow over the championship. Schumacher and Benetton also found themselves at the centre of sporting and technical controversies as the year unfolded.

Then came Adelaide. Schumacher and Hill collided while fighting for the title, both were forced out of the race, and Schumacher became world champion by a single point. More than three decades later, the incident is still debated.

The documentary brings in a number of people who were there as it all unfolded, including former Benetton team principal Flavio Briatore, former Formula 1 boss Bernie Ecclestone, Schumacher’s former manager Willi Weber and former F1 driver David Coulthard. German broadcasters Kai Ebel and Heiko Waßer also feature.

Directed by Christin Freitag and produced by LEONINE Documentaries, Schumacher ’94 – The Birth of a Legend goes back to the year his first world championship turned Schumacher into one of motorsport’s defining names.
