Tense New ‘Searching’ Trailer: John Cho Heads Online to Find His Missing Daughter

Sony Pictures

Sony has dropped an intense new trailer for Searching, the upcoming tech thriller told via devices.

John Cho plays David Kim, a desperate father who decides to go through his missing daughter’s laptop after 37 hours goes by with no lead.

The early reviews have been quite strong for the film; it currently stands at 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics have commended the palpable tension and debut filmmaker Aneesh Chaganty’s use of technology as a way to amplify its storytelling techniques. The slickly edited trailer below hints at a nail-biting, twist-filled film, and nicely teases that everyone – even our lead character – is holding back some secrets.

Searching, also starring Debra Messing, Joseph Lee, Michelle La, and Sara Sohn, will be hitting US cinemas on August 3 and arrives in Australia on September 13. A good time if you’re into this format; Unfriended: Dark Web will be opening in the US next month.

Official synopsis for Searching:

After David Kim (John Cho)’s 16-year-old daughter goes missing, a local investigation is opened and a detective is assigned to the case. But 37 hours later and without a single lead, David decides to search the one place no one has looked yet, where all secrets are kept today: his daughter’s laptop. In a hyper-modern thriller told via the technology devices we use every day to communicate, David must trace his daughter’s digital footprints before she disappears forever.
