M. Night Shyamalan is in talks to re-team with Bruce Willis, the star of (arguably) his two finest films The Sixth Sense and Unbreakable. Deadline has reported that the two may once again join forces for Labor of Love, based on one of the first screenplays that Shyamalan sold.
Willis will play the owner of a Philadelphia bookstore who loses the love of his life. Worried that he never told her how much he truly loved her, he decides to embark on a walk across the country – as he promised her he would when she was still alive. That trek starts from Philadelphia to Pacifica, CA, which was her favourite place.
The screenplay for Labor of Love was sold to Fox back in 1993, but it failed to materialise since they weren’t willing to have Shyamalan attached as a director as well. The screenplay was brought back to life a few years ago, when Denzel Washington was eyeing it.
If all goes according to plan, production in Philadelphia will start in mid-September. The project is to be financed by Emmett/Furla/Oasis, who have had a hit with the Oscar-nominated Lone Survivor. They are also funding the upcoming Martin Scorsese picture Silence, which will follow two Jesuit priests facing violence and persecution when they travel to Japan to locate their mentor and to spread the gospel of Christianity. The 17th century-set drama is set to star Andrew Garfield, Adam Driver, and Ken Watanabe.
