A powerful new international trailer has dropped for Martin Scorsese’s upcoming film, Silence.

The film follows two Christian missionaries (played by Andrew Garfield and Adam Driver) who head to Japan to find their missing mentor (Liam Neeson) during a time in which all forms of Christianity have been outlawed, punishable by death.

It certainly looks like it’s going to be a hard-going film, at least in terms of the hardships and brutality we’re going to see on screen. The new trailer below showcases more footage from the film, and more of what could be one of Garfield’s best performances yet. The film looks like a carefully crafted, potent drama, which comes as no surprise since its from one of cinema’s masters. We can’t wait.

Silence, also starring Tadanobu Asano, Ciarán Hinds and Shin’ya Tsukamoto, among others, will hit the US in limited release on December 23 and will go wide on January 6. The film arrives in Australia on February 16.
