New ‘Slender Man’ Trailer Brings a Horror Meme to Life

Check out the new trailer Sony has released for upcoming horror film Slender Man, based on the viral meme character created by Something Awful forums user Eric Knudsen (aka “Victor Surge”) in 2009.

The film follows a group of teens that decide they’re going to look into Slender Man lore when one of their friends disappears. Yeah, no prizes for guessing that they’re all in for a hard time.

Sylvain White (The Losers, Stomp the Yard) looks to be capturing some pretty eerie imagery, some of which brings Gore Verbinski’s The Ring to mind. We’ll see whether the film can avoid silliness and actually provide potent unnerving moments (that aren’t about generic jump scares), and if the screenplay by David Birke (Elle, 13 Sins) can nail some effective points of difference among the many similar entries in the teen horror genre.

Slender Man, starring Joey King, Julia Goldani-Telles, Jaz Sinclair, Annalise Basso, and Javier Botet, will be hitting US cinemas on 10 August and arrives in Australian cinemas on 23 August.

In a small town in Massachusetts, a group of friends perform a ritual in an attempt to debunk the lore of SLENDER MAN. When one of them goes mysteriously missing, they begin to suspect that she is, in fact, HIS latest victim.
