Lionsgate has dropped the trailer for Small Things Like These, an upcoming period drama starring and produced by Oscar winner Cillian Murphy.Â
Murphy stars as Bill Furlong, a coal merchant and father, who, in the lead-up to Christmas 1985, uncovers unsettling secrets hidden by the local convent. This discovery forces him to confront not only his own past but also the collective silence of his small Irish town, heavily influenced by the Catholic Church.
The film also features Emily Watson, Eileen Walsh, Michelle Fairley, and Zara Devlin. Watson’s performance earned her the Silver Bear for Best Supporting Performance at this year’s Berlin Film Festival, where Small Things Like These made history as the first Irish film to open the prestigious event.
Adapted from Claire Keegan’s bestselling novel, Small Things Like These is directed by Tim Mielants (Peaky Blinders, The Terror, The Responder), with a screenplay by Enda Walsh (Hunger, The House).
Murphy, who also serves as a producer, discussed his deep connection to the project in a Deadline interview earlier this year: “I’d read the book and it really connected with me, and I felt I could see it as a film, you know?” Murphy also revealed how Matt Damon and Ben Affleck‘s Artists Equity came on board after he shared the story with Damon while working on Oppenheimer: “I told him about [the story] and he loved the sound of it.”
The film is set to premiere in the UK and Ireland on November 1, with a U.S. release following on November 8.
