It’s a good time to be Henry Golding right now.
The Crazy Rich Asians and A Simple Favour (which were just a year ago) actor can be seen in the trailer that’s just dropped for rom-com Last Christmas (with Emilia Clarke), has a role in upcoming Guy Ritchie crime-comedy The Gentlemen, and has now been named as the star of G.I. Joe spinoff Snake Eyes.
As reported by THR and confirmed by Deadline, Paramount has entered negotiations with the Malaysian-born actor to take on the lead role as the ninja commando that first appeared in the 1980s G.I. Joe toy line relaunch.
The character of Snake Eyes had his face disfigured in a helicopter and usually has his face covered with a balaclava. His vocal cords were also damaged, leading to him barely ever speaking a word. His various skills include black belt-levels in 12 different fighting systems, edged weapons (particularly with his Japanese sword), small arms, as well as firearms and explosives. He’s been on various solo mission apart from the G.I. Joe Team, working with his pet wolf named Timber. His arch enemy: a ninja known as Storm Shadow, who’s also his brother.
Snake Eyes will be following the character as he seeks revenge for his father’s death. He joins a ninja clan and finds acceptance in the process.
Ray Park played the character in Paramount’s previous two G.I. Joe films: 2009’s G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra and 2013’s G.I Joe: Retaliation.
The studio also has another spinoff in the works, this one featuring the character of Chuckles.
