A new trailer has been released for Son of Saul, a Hungarian drama set in 1944 Auschwitz.
Géza Röhrig plays Saul, an Auschwitz prisoner tasked with burning the corpses of his own people. When he finds the body of young boy he takes to be his son, he attempts to salvage the body and have his son buried by a rabbi.
This grim and tragic film has early reviewers raving, with many calling it a harrowing, yet truly masterful, piece of cinema. Hungary has put Son of Saul forward as their contender for the Best Foreign Film Oscar, and one look at the stark trailer below provides a glimpse at why. We can’t wait to see this.
Son of Saul, the feature film debut of director László Nemes, will open in limited U.S. release on December 18.
Synopsis for Son of Saul:
October 1944, Auschwitz-Birkenau. Saul Ausländer is a Hungarian member of the Sonderkommando, the group of Jewish prisoners isolated from the camp and forced to assist the Nazis in the machinery of large-scale extermination. While working in one of the crematoriums, Saul discovers the body of a boy he takes for his son. As the Sonderkommando plans a rebellion, Saul decides to carry out an impossible task: save the child’s body from the flames, find a rabbi to recite the mourner’s Kaddish and offer the boy a proper burial.
