Well, this was unexpected. Sony Pictures has dropped their Aaron Sorkin-scripted Steve Jobs film.
Yes, it appears Sony is no longer interested in developing the project – even with Danny Boyle (Trainspotting, Slumdog Millionaire) attached to direct.
Deadline broke the news, writing that Sony had simply placed the project “in turnaround”. A project like this isn’t left abandoned for long, and Universal has already been named as a possible new home. While neither Sony nor Universal have commented on the news, Deadline is reporting that Universal is “essentially giving it a green light”.
The project was placed on the fast track after it was green-lit, but Sony wasn’t able to sign up an actor as the lead. Leonardo DiCaprio was once on board, then Christian Bale circled for a while. After Bale bailed (sorry) earlier this month, Michael Fassbender’s name popped up. There’s no one officially on board, although Seth Rogen and Jessica Chastain may be close.
We’ll let you know as soon as anything else comes to light.
